When Helen was merely nineteen months old,she was struck by a strange illness that left her deaf and blind. She became quite helpless and most of the time she would just sit in her mother's lap trying to feel every object and motion with her hand This was how she learnt many things. She began to feel intense urge to communicate. Her strong will made her developed some Crude signes to communicate. A Shake of her head meant 'No' and nod meant 'Yes'.Similarly she wuould pull someone to call and push to indicate to go. When she wanted bread she would make sign of cutting the slices and applying butter on them. For an ice cream, her sign would be different, some what like the working of freezer and shivering. In her initial days, her mother had also helped her a lot to cope up with the darkness and silence that followed after her illness
