The journey to Alabama was very pleasant for Helen. She made friends with many people on the train. One lady gave her a box of shells while her father made holes in these so that she could string them and for a long time they kept her happy and contented. The conductor was also kind to her. Often when he went his rounds, she would cling to his coat tails while he collected and punched the tickets. His punch, which he let her play with, was a delightful toy for her. Curled up in a corner of the seat, she amused herself for hours making funny little holes in bits of cardboard.
