After Helen was able to spell a few words, her teacher started the practice of giving her some slips of cardboard that had printed words in raised letters. Helen quickly learnt that each printed word stood for an object or an act. She was also given a frame in which she could arrange the words in little sentences. However, before she could put sentences in the frame, she used to make them in objects. This way she learnt to make sentences from words.
