Many of Helen Keller's early lessons from her teacher, Anne Sullivan, took place out of doors because Helen enjoyed the outdoors immensely and because she relied on the sense of touch to learn new things. As Helen Keller writes:

"All my early lessons have in them the breath of the woods–the fine, resinous odour of pine needles, blended with the perfume of wild grapes. Seated in the gracious shade of a wild tulip tree, I learned to think that everything has a lesson and a suggestion. 'The loveliness of things taught me all their use.'"

From being out of doors, Helen Keller began to learn the ways of nature, such as the way grass grows and how birds find shelter in their nests. She also began to understand abstractions from her experiences in nature. For example, when the sun emerged from behind a cloud to shine warmly, Helen Keller began to understand what the word "love" meant--a concept she had been struggling to comprehend. Later, Helen Keller built mounds of earth to understand geography. She studied botany and zoology by experiencing at the growth of a plant. She loved nature, and this love helped motivate her to learn.

Helen keller's learnt her early lessons from her teacher. Her teacher Anne Sullivan took place out of door because she enjoyed the outdoors very much and because she relied on the sense of touch to learn new things. She studied zoology and Botany in a leisurely manner by experiencing at the growth of a plant. She bought a Lily and set it in a Sunny window. Very soon she noticed the signs of opening in the pointed buds. This process was reluctant in the beginning but later on used to go on rapidly in order and systematically. There was all always one bud larger and more beautiful than the rest which pushed her outer covering with more pomp. In a way she learnt from life itself.Everything that could Hum or buzz or Sing or Bloom played a part in education. Once a gentleman sent Helen a collection of fossils which were tiny mollusc shells beautifully marked. These unfolded for her an ancient world of terrible beasts that once roamed the Earth. From a beautiful shell she learnt how a tiny mollusc had built the lustrous coil for his dwelling place. She learnt many things about land and the sea creatures. Then she got a glass globe in which there were 11 tadpoles. When she put her hand on the globe she felt the tadpoles thrash about.

Helen felt the bursting cotton balls and felt their short fibre and fuzzy seeds, the wind blowing and the rustling of the leaves. Helen began to understand abstractions from her experience in nature.
