Hello friend..
As the national movement developed, nationalist leaders used more and more symbols and icons in unifying people and inspiring in them a feeling of nationalism.
(i) During the Swadeshi Movement in Bengal, a tricolour flag (red, green and yellow) was designed. It had eight lotuses which represented eight provinces of British India. The crescent moon in the flag represented Hindus and Muslims.
(ii) By 1921, Gandhiji had designed the Swaraj flag, was also tricolour (red, green and white) and had spinning wheel in the centre, which represented the Gandhian values, i.e. self help.
(iii) Carrying the Swaraj flag, holding it aloft, during marches became a symbol of defiance.

Some icons and symbols were used for unifying the people and inspiring within them the feeling on nationalism as the national movement developed in the country. The following facts justify this statement:
1.The image of Bharat Mata came to be identified with India or Our Motherland. It was first painted by Abanindranath Tagore. She was portrayed as an aesthetic meaning-calm, composed, divine and spiritual. Later the image was painted by many other artists and acquired different forms. This image was circulated in various popular prints.
2. The national flag also became a powerful symbol of nationalism. During the Swadeshi Movement in Bengal a tricolour flag(red, green and yellow) was designed with 8 lotuses representing 8 provinces of British India and crescent moon representing the Hindus and Muslims. Gandhiji also designed the Swaraj flag later. Carrying the flag and holding it aloft during the marches became a symbol of Defiance against colonial rule.
Thus, history, folklore and poetry become important symbols of national resistance
