How did kings treat traders earlier

In the medieval system, there were the kings, the feudal lords and the businessmen.


France, England and the holy Roman empire treated them in different and individual ways.


There was rigid social stratification and a merchant would have sold his wares and also imported some more, but he was to be part of the merchant guild. A guild was always under the domination of the king’s nobles.
