Miss Mebbin managed to get her weekend cottage by blackmailing and threatening Mrs.Packletide that she would disclose her secret (that she did not actually shoot the tiger, but the goat, which was supposed to be bait, and that the tiger died from a mere heart attack), lest Mrs.Packletide give some kind of bribe to her, to keep her mouth shut. As for the tiger lillies, I think that is just a way to add a little whimsy to the story, for Miss Mebbin to always remember that it was because of the old tiger that she had gotten that cottage.
