In Mendel’s experiment, when pure tall pea plants were crossed with pure dwarf pea plants, only tall pea plants were obtained in F1 generation.
On selfing the pea plants of F1 generation both tall and dwarf pea plants were obtained in F2 generation.
Reappearance of the dwarf pea plants in F2 generation proves that the dwarf trait was inherited but not expressed in F1 generation.

I'll explain in simple words.
He took many pea plant of variant characters like for example varying pod shape, height of the plant, color of the flower etc and started cultivating them.
For our understanding lets keep an eye on the height of the plant.
Parent:- Tall Tall
1st generation :- Tall Small
2nd generation:- Tall Tall
In first generation one plant was small, but in the next generation all plants are tall. This stated that there is something which is passing on (genes) to other generation which might or might not be expressed in few generations and might be expressed in other generations.
