How did mendel explain that it is possible that trait is inherited bit not expressed in an organism?

We know that there are two types of alleles, dominant and recessive. In heterozygous condition, the zygote has both dominant and recessive allele, but only the dominant character is seen. For example : in a pea plant (in the f1 progeny) the gene composition is found to be Tt, but still it is a tall plant.
