Because he was noble person and was strictly against violence. He asked people to follow the path of nonviolence. in that way he earned the title "Mahatma"

He became mahatma through his deeds for good of people.... He was main leader in movement for independence... He gave us path of non violence to fight.... He made us understand that all are equal by changing the status of dalits in India....
