The students in Vietnam were inspired by patriotic feelings and felt that it was the duty of the educated to fight for the benefit of society. So the students started forming various political parties by 1920s, such as the Party of Young Annan, and publishing nationalist journals like the Annanese Student. So schools became an important place for political and cultural battles. For example in 1926 the Saigon Native Girls school expelled a student from the school on racial grounds. Due to strong protest by the students the school had to readmit the student. The teachers and students did not follow the curriculum prescribed by the French blindly.
In 1903, when a major part of Hanoi was struck with plague. To stop this from spreading the French used Vietnamese workers to take up a rat hunt. The Vietnamese started collective bargaining. Another thing that they did was that they clipped only the tail of the rat to show as a proof of killing and released the rat. Some people started raising rats to earn more money. In this way, the actions of the rat catchers were a some of the numerous small ways in which colonialism was fought in everyday life.
The religious activists united the people to fight against the conversion of people to Christianity.
