At the end of the 19th century hundreds of prominent politicians and private citizens used the newspapers and magazines to denounce American imperialism. They wrote against the acquisition of Puerto Rico, Hawaii and the Philippines. They opposed belligerent diplomacy and expansionist projects. Some of them opposed the expansion of US on moral grounds while others believed that the annexation of foreign peoples would dilute America's racial purity.
