National Rural Employment Guarantee Act was formulated in 2005 and launched by the prime minister on 22nd February 2006.
Later on, its name changed to Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA)
The main features of this scheme are as follows:
1. It provided livelihood to the people below the poverty line. It guaranteed hundred days of wage employment in a year to every rural household in 625 district of the country.
2. It targets scheduled castes, Scheduled Tribes and women suffering from poverty in rural areas.
3.This act is also known as right to work because if the comment fails in its duty to provide employment, it will give unemployment allowances to the people.
