Although pesants made up the majority of the common people (the Third Estate, as they were known), they were not actually the leaders of the revolution. The men who made the revolution, men like Mirabeau, and later, Robespierre, Danton, Marat, etc, were not peasants, but professional men, mainly lawyers and doctors. The middle class actually dominated the revolution, rather than the peasants. Peasants marched, rioted, and killed when they were told to, but their leaders were very much middle class.
