In "Shooting an Elephant" he uses the example of when he had shoot an elephant.The Burmese people hate him because he was one of the police officer of the British. They did not like him being a police officer in their homeland. However he had to help the people when the elephant got loose over and destroy part of the village and killed a man.

In the end Orwell decided to shoot the elephant, but only as a way to show his authority with the British government, so that he would not look weak. Orwell was out numbered by the Burmese people and need to shoot the elephant to keep them at bay, and also he may not be mook by the people.
