Before rearing of animals begun, early man hunted wild animals and ate them as food.
It was in around 12,500 BC that wild wolf cubs, which would be with man, began being watched over and kept as companions.
Then by 10,000 BC, sheep, goat and gazelle in herds, were watched by man and the weakest of them killed for food.
Gradually rearing of animals began as it dawned on the early man that animals could give them milk and meat.
