Print introduced debate and discussion :-
(i) Print was used to criticise existing practices. Through
print, people could be persuaded to think differently.
(ii) Even those who disagreed with established authorities
could now print and circulate their ideas. It shaped new ideas and debates and
new ideas emerged from clashes.
(iii) The religious reformer Martin Luther wrote ninety five
theses criticising many of the practices and rituals of the Roman Catholic Church. He challenged the Church to debate his ideas.
•Through the printed messages one cogld persuade people to think differently and move them to action.
•Not everyone welcomed printed books. While Martin Luther said, ‘print is the ultimate gift of god’ and Mercier called print as engine of progress, there were others who feared that if there was no control over what was printed, the rebellious and irreligious thoughts might spread. As a result, the authority of valuable literature would be destroyed.
•While several scholars debated that the print brought about a new intellectual atmosphere and helped spread the new ideas that led to the reformation. Their interpretation of Bible enraged the catholic church who imposed restriction on printed matters.
