Ram Mohan Roy (1774 – 1833) was an Indian reformer during the British colonisation of India. He was responsible for several important reforms in Indian society including the abolition of Hindu practices such as Sati and polygamy. He was also instrumental in setting up the Brahmo Samaj and helping fight for women’s rights to inherit property.

He was ambivalent towards the British and viewed them favourably initially. He sought their help for abolishing several practices. He also widely toured and met with English people during his visit to England on behalf of the Mughal emperor. However, he was critical of several Englishmen for their attempts to loot India of its wealth.
