Reading became a mania in Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries due to increase in literacy rates. Literacy rates increased to between 60 and 80 percent in some parts of Europe. This lead to an increase in reading habit. Examples of this habit are the books that publishers brought out at prices that were sufficiently low such that the common people could afford them. In England, penny chapbooks were published. In France, the Bibliotheque Bleue books were sold.
