During the time of the Buddha, Hinduism did not exist. The religion
that it was born from, Vedicism, was the religion of the time.
Jainism had been around for 200-300 years
Buddha disliked the caste system of the Vedic religion. He also
disliked the self-mortifications done by the Jains and other
ascetics, instead proscribing the Middle Way.
However, Buddha allowed converts to continue worshiping their gods.
He also allowed Jain converts to keep their Jain identities and
continue to give alms to Jain ascetics.
