Answer:

Slavery was so profitable, it sprouted more millionaires per capita in the Mississippi River valley than anywhere in the nation. With cash crops of tobacco, cotton and sugar cane, America's southern states became the economic engine of the burgeoning nation.

The economy of the southern states of America was highly dependent on slavery. Slaves were bought for a lifetime, and beyond, because their children too were then born into slavery. Slave owners freely exploited them, to earn greater profits. Various industries, including tobacco and rice mainly employed slaves.

When the northern states wanted form a union, and abolish slavery, the southern states refused to do so. Plantation owners and politicians could not bear the idea of not having slaves as exploitable cheap labour. So, the southern states refused to join the union. As a result, the civil war was fought. The southern states formed the Confederate army while the northern states formed the Union army. Eventually, the Confederate army surrendered and the Union was established. Thus, slavery influenced the social, economic and political fabric of the states in both the northern and southern parts of America.
