Smith and Carlos wanted to draw international attention to the bad practises of racial discrimination that affected Olympics event.

It was done in 1968 by wearing black socks in the Olympic event and they wore no shoes also, to symbolize Black American poverty.

In addition to that they also had black gloves and clenched fists.
