After Helen was struck by illness that left her deaf and blind there's nothing she could do to make others understand what she wanted. This condition left her quite frustrated and she used to throw tantrums very often. She was spoiled as her family anguished over her illness, and had indulged their strong willed child Helen acted abusively even towards Miss Sullivan and did not welcome her teachers company. As well as locking her instructor in a room, Helen would hit and bite her. She did not like this new and unfamiliar life which was not filled with structure and daily lessons. She felt threatened by Miss Sullivan presence.
Regardless of Helen's behaviour Miss Sullivan learned that it was useless to try her teach her language until she learnt to obey.Miss Sullivan realised that Helen needed to be disciplined. Within a week of a arrival Miss Sullivan shifted Helen from main house to a nearly Cottage where she could teach Helen the discipline she would need to learn from interference from Helen’s parents.
After teaching Helen basic language skills by using her finger to spell words on her palm. Miss Sullivan next tackled Helen's atrocious table manners. Helen had the habit of eating with her hands grabbing from the plates of everyone at the table and throwing a tantrum if anyone tried to stop her.
Miss Sullivan punished Helen by refusing to ‘talk’ to her by Spelling words on her hands. Soon Helen developed good manners and learnt how to perform everyday tasks such as getting dressed and brushing her hair.Miss Sullivan tackled Helen with patients and love. She knew that a child who was deaf and blind finded it hard to communicate with others, which resulted in frustration. It was only due to Miss Sullivan that Helen was able to come out of her darkness.
