During Freedom movement the leadership realised that the democratic system after independence can be functional only when a condition of peace and security is maintained.
In India the development process cannot be accelerated unless the peace prevails. In the Absence of peace and security democracy cannot function and development cannot take place.
Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru said this in 1949 at Columbia University:
“Peace is not only an absolute necessity for us in India in order to progress and develop but also of Paramount importance to the world.”
