Answer:

The author has created the atmosphere of fear in the story 'A Face in the Dark'. The author has described the boy's face as faceless face, i.e., without eyes, nose, eyebrows, lips, etc. Also when Mr. Oliver ran away from that boy towards the forest, he met a watchman who was similiar like the boy, i.e., he too had a faceless face. This thrilled the readers. Also in the begining of the story, the author described the forest and created an eerie atmosphere. It was a night time and a strong wind was blowing, the pine trees were making mysterious sad sounds, indicating that some evil was likely to happen.

To create an eerie atmosphere in the story “A Face in the Dark” the author has used his description of the surroundings and the boy, clever narrative of the story and even the title. ... Even the title of the story evokes suspense in the readers' minds, thereby creating an eerie atmosphere even before the story begins.
