The benefit for the British in the subsidiary alliance was that they could exert power on the native kingdoms without being formally responsible for administration. Under the subsidiary alliance, native Indian rulers were supposed to govern with the approval of the British government. Hence, the British could compel the rulers to act in the interest of the British without bearing any responsibility for their acts.

As a part of the policy British contingent would be posted in the native state and the Indian ruler had to make payments for their maintenance. If the Indian ruler failed to make the payments, a part of the territory would be snatched by the British. For example, in 1801, the Nawab of Awadh was forced to give over half of his territory to the Company for failing to pay for the “subsidiary forces”.
