Farmers were being exploited and oppressed in different ways by Neeley Britishers under Khurki and Teenkathiya systems. Under Khurki system, the British planters used to pay some money to the farmers (Raiyyat) by mortgaging their lands and houses and compelling them to sow indigo.

The British exploit the Indian farmers by snatching their lands and imposing heavy taxes on the farmers. They are forced to grow only those crops which are required by the British companies. Example : opium ,indigo Tea , Pepper etc. They are over - burnded with repayment of loans , debt and high rate of interest. They were leading a life of poverty , misery and frustration. As a result, many peasents , who failed to pay the land revenue , lost their land and become landless labourers. They were forced to work at very low wages.
