According to Catholic teaching, the CatholicChurch was founded by Jesus Christ. The New Testament records Jesus' activities and teaching, his appointment of the twelve Apostles, and his instructions to them to continue his work.

During the Middle Ages, the Catholic Church help preserve ancient knowledge by having Monks copy books by hand. This way, information was written down, thus allowing to save a great amount of data that would, otherwise, be lost.
