Answer:

Explanation:

After the Sangam era, we lost the traces of Chola empire.

From religious historical texts —such as Devaram—, we can learn that Cholas were reduced to a status of vassal or independent tiny status. It seems they kept ruling their massively reduced territory from Uraiyur.

In the meantime, Kalabhras rose to power (there's still a debate on the origins of this empire) then Pallavas became an empire by putting an end to these Kalabhras (a non-Tamil people or anti-Brahmin rebels).

Finally, in 885 CE, there was a civil war in Pallava empire, an issue of succession between Nripatunga and his stepbrother, Aparajita.

Pandyas allied with Nripatunga and as there was a recent enmity between Pandyas and Cholas, the latter, under Aditya Chola I, joined hands with Aparajita.

The war broke out at Thirupurambiyam, near Kumbakonam. Breaking into pieces Pandyas and Nripatunga, Cholas and Aparajita emerged victorious.

This is the first victory of Cholas against Pandavas after centuries of life in shadow.

Motivated by this, Chola king, Aditya I, will soon rebel against Pallava empire and kill Aparajita Pallava in the battlefield.

This is the end of Pallava empire and the rise of Cholas.

Aditya I will continue his conquests subduing Kongus and Pandyas. His empire will be stabilised by his son Parantaka I and raised to its peak by the great father-son, Raja Raja Chola I and Rajendra Chola I.

P.S: Vijayala Chola, Aditya Chola's father was the one to conquer Thanjavur, the medieval chola capital, from Mutharaiyas.
