Several new towns came up as a result of the railroad work. Manufacturing companies along the railroad route saw a jump in their business, as work on the Transcontinental Railroad progressed. This was as a result of the large number of work-force, who were involved in the work. Most of them settled in these new towns.

The first Transcontinental Railroad was 1,912 miles long, connecting Omaha, Nebraska to the Pacific coast at Oakland Long Wharf, San Francisco Bay.
