The King's enemy was waiting outside the cave for him to kill him. The king didn't step out of the cave and fall into his trap as he was busy digging the beds for the hermit.

If the king had not pitied the hermit's weakness and had not dug those beds for the hermit but had gone away the that man would have attached him and he won't have repented for not having stayed with the hermit.
