The EIC got the possession of Bombay, which also later became one of their headquarters or as they said "Presidencies", was gained when Charles II of Britian married Catherine the daughter of King John IV of Portuguese. Bombay was given to Charles as a gift or 'dowry' by King John for Catherine.
