The settlement changed the plight of the peasants. Previously the landlords behaved as lords above the law. Now the farmers realised they had their legal rights and support of people to defend them. They learnt to fight for their rights with courage. Within few years the British planters abandoned their estates, which was returned to the peasants. Finally indigo share cropping disappeared.
