Axel Steensberg introduced the term “implement geography” along with “implement archaeology” and “implement history” in his monograph entitled “Ancient Harvesting Implements” (Nationalmuseets Skrifter, Arkoeologisk‐Historisk Roekke, I [Kobenhavn, 1943], p. 248). In his study, Steensberg was concerned primarily with tracing the origin and evolution of implement forms, which he considered to be “not the outcome of fortuitous inspiration and influence … [but] the fruits of deliberate endeavours at adaption to the natural conditions and the form of culture prevailing ….” (Ibid.)
