The Indian Handicraft industry was adversely affected with the advent of the industrial revolution. India became a market for finished goods and a supplier for raw material. It turned agricultural india into an economic colony. The indian goods were imposed with high import taxes and the british goods were cheap plus were charged a nominal duty. This led to a drain of India's wealth to England. Further, after the gradual expansion of british dominion in India by outright wars with the kings led to the decline of kings, chieftains and zamindars that were the employers for these masters of handicraft. Thus the handicraft in india suffered.
