The people of Bastar believe that each village was given its land by the Earth, and in return, they look after the earth by making some offerings at each agricultural festival.

In the following ways the native people look after and preserve the forest in Bastar region:

1. They persuaded honor to the goddesses of the rivers, the mountains and the forests. Since all people identified their regions they looked after natural resources within it.

2. People from a different defined boundary could get some wood from the forests of another area just by paying a small fee "devsari", "man" or "dand” in exchange.

3. The hired watchmen to protect forests, who were paid by amount accumulated by all the villagers.
