As soon as the ship reached the equator, a terrible storm hit and forced the ship southwards. The wind blew with such force that the ship pitched down in the surf as though it were fleeing an enemy. Then the sailors reached a calm patch of sea that was "wondrous cold", full of snow and glistening green icebergs as tall as the ship's mast.

The mariners were drifted southwards by a 'tyrannous and strong' storm. The storm 'chased' the ship off course and made them reach the land of ice and snow where it grew freezing cold. They were surrounded by large masts of ice and their ship could hardly move in the frozen sea.
