The narrator went to the Mrs Dorling at Number 46 , Marconi Street , after the war had ended , to take back her mother's belongings. She was turned away the first time she went to the house. The second time , Mrs Dorling's daughter invited her in , upon which the narrator realised that her mother's belongings had been surrounding Mrs Dorling's living room . The wooden table with a small scar , the china cutlery decorated on the walls and the silver spoons in the wooden box , the silver candleholder, next to a mirror  all belonged to her late mother .

The narrator was horrified to find herself in a room she knew and did not know. She found herself in the midst of familiar things which she longed to see again but which troubled her in the strange atmosphere. She had no courage to look around her. But she no longer had the desire to possess them. She got up, walked to the door, and left the room. She resolved to forget the address and moved on.
