In the same manner that people rejected the Democratic dogma of the late 70s-early 80s, from Jimmy Carter and others, that our best days are behind us, we have to scale back our goals, make do with less, etc. Reagan came along with a positive message of better days ahead. And also he understood (like Bill Clinton) that the number one issue should be: It’s the economy, stupid. Enthusiasm and motivation will draw more support than lectures about gloom and doom.
