how did the police system originate in India

Police in India was created by Lord Cornwallis as one of the three pillars of British colonial rule ( the other two being Civil services and Army). Earlier, the policing in India was done by the zamindars only, under the system of thanas. Cornwallis established a system of circles headed by a daroga.
