At first , the postmaster was a man devoid of compassion (kindness). But one day he faced the same situation that Ali was in. He realised the painful mental situation of Ali . The postmaster now grew remorseful and became a changed man.

It was All's daily habit to tour the post-office, as he expected to get a letter that could deliver him the message of his daughter's health. But his declining health infringed his daily routine. On another day, he came back to the post-office. He had realized that his life was close to its end. Hence, he grew anx-ious to know about his daughter's message. At first, the postmaster is domineering; he scolds Ali and is callous to his feelings but after detachment from his daughter he recognizes his mistake and his behav-ior changes drastically, he felt sorry for Ali. And then he moved to the grave of Ali to place the letter there.
