The professor had managed to offend the Sergeant by interrupting him amidst a class in musketry. It was a lecture on ​ mechanism of a service rifle. Quelch corrected the Sergeant in front of the class and it infuriated the Segeant.

While describing the function of Service Rifle, the Sergeant said that the  the speed at which the bullet leaves the rifle is more than two thousand two thousand feet per second. Private Quelch interrupted to say that it is two four four zero feet per second. The Sergeant then put Private Quelch two may questions. He, however gave right answers to each and every question put up by the Sergeant.
