How did the Rashrakutas become powerful?

Rashtrakutas were initially subordinate to the chalukya of karnataka. In the mid eighteenth century , dantidurga ,A rashtrakuta Chief ,overthrew his chalukya overload and established his right to rule by performing the hiranya Garbha ritual.
