As the grandmother's body lay dead and wrapped in a red shroud, thousands of sparrows sat scattered on the floor all over the verandah and into the room right up to where the body lay.
The sparrows also joined in mourning the death of the grandmother. They didn’t chirrup. There was no chirping and when the narrator's mother fetched some bread to give to the birds feeling sorry for their loss, they did not take notice of the bread crumbs. As grandmother's corpse was carried out, they quietly flew away.
