how did the teacher obseve nora while learning

In the lesson 'How Teachers Learn' by John Caldwill Holt, the Teacher observes Nora's reading, silently. He was quiet , but very observant. He stopped her, only when she seemed to be stuck. He made her guess the word, instead of actually telling it. Even then, if Nora was not able to spell the word, the Teacher asked her to skip the word and continue reading.
