The history of the United States began with the settlement of Indigenous people before 15,000 BC. Numerous cultures formed. The arrival of Christopher Columbus in the year of 1492 started the European colonization of the Americas. Most colonies formed after 1600. By 1769s, thirteen British colonies contained 2.5 million people along the Atlantic coasteast of the Appalachian Mountains. After defeating France, the British government imposed a series of new taxes after 1765, rejecting the colonists' argument that new taxes needed their approval (see Stamp Act 1765). Tax resistance, especially the Boston Tea Party (1773), led to punitive laws by Parliament designed to end self-government in Massachusetts.

SA became the bread basket of the world by transforming the vacant, fertile land of the prairies for cultivation of maize, wheat and soybean. Gradually farming was mechanised and better seeds were introduced; this increased the yields even more. So, USA continued to produce food grains far in excess of its own requirement.
The westward expansion of settlers in the 19th century and annexation of territory from Mexico made it possible for farming to spread with the help of abundant slave labour. Death, due more to diseases than in war, of the native Americans, helped the settlers carry out farming in a big way without much local resistance.
