This is the answer how i think it should be if you are really on the chapter which is called how tom white washed the fence. So the answer goes like this

Tom convinced Ben to whitewash the fence by showing him that he loved his work and it was very interesting and entertaining. Tom also made the work more desirable and hard to get so that Ben would want it even more. He also challenged Ben’s abilities so that Ben would do the work to prove Tom wrong and Tom even aroused curiosity in Ben to bribe him to do the work.
