Tom Ramsay and George Ramsay are brothers in the short story writer William Somerset Maugham’s story “The Ant and the Grasshopper”.
The story is about the two brothers George Ramsay and Tom Ramsay. While George was a hard-working and honest man, Tom was irresponsible and spent all his money on living a luxurious life and would always borrowed money from everyone. George helped his brother several times but on one occasion when he refused to lend money to Tom, the latter blackmailed him by saying that if George didn’t lend him money, he would work in a bar or work as a taxi driver, which would dishonor the family name. Hence George agrees to lend him money to protect his family name.
On another occasion George saves Tom from going to jail by settling the issue with a man called Cronshaw who threatened Tom to go to court if he didn't pay his money. George settles the issue by paying Cronshaw five hundred pounds.
In this way Tom manages to get money from George....
