One of the famous women novelist in 19th century was Jane Austen. She wrote about the world of women in genteel rural society in early 19th century which encouraged Women to look for good marriage and find wealthy or propertied husbands. The novel Pride and Prejudice states that it is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.

Other women novelists did not simply popularise the domestic role of women. Their novels dealt with women, who broke and established norms of society before adjusting to them. Such novels allowed the women readers to sympathise with rebellious actions. Charlotte Bronte in her novel Jane Eyre portrayed . independent and assertive young ‘Jane’ who strongly protested against the hypocrisy of her elders.
