Women were left to cope with the task of earning a living and looking after their families. Most of the women had to work for a living. They worked as laundresses or seamstresses, sold flowers, fruits and vegetables or they were employed as a domestic servants. They could not get education or any job training. Working women also had to take care of their families, that is to cook, fetch water, queue up for bread and look after their children. Their wages were also lower than men. All the women were considered as passive citizens forced to rely on men to determine what was best for them. Women had no political rights in pre-Revolutionary France. They were not allowed to vote. All-in all, women were considered the property of men, father, husband and state.
